Class Descriptions

The Center Stage Dance Program

Mommy and Me

  • Liven up your child’s imagination with our Mommy & Me class, designed to bring out the natural bond between movement and music. In this class, you and your child will explore your senses of rhythm and melody while in a soft and safe environment, while our professional teacher guides you.


Creative Movement

  • This blend of movement & music, improvisation and basic dance skills allows children the opportunity to enhance their athletic prowess while learning basic tumbling and dance skills. They will develop coordination and motor skills while enhancing their music and art interpretation. We will explore concepts of dance such as size, shape, direction and speed while providing a chance for the children to express their inner feelings through movement. It is an opportunity to expand their verbal and physical vocabulary as we build an appreciation for music and dance and a positive foundation for future learning.


Ballet/ Tap/ Acrobatics Combination Class
Ballet/ Tap/ Jazz Combination Class

  • An introduction to the fundamentals of various styles. The emphasis in these classes is on having fun and building the self-esteem of the dancer.


Beginner Ballet

  • For students who are new to ballet. Emphasis on building strong ballet technique, musicality, placement, & familiarization with basic exercises, strength & flexibility will be the focus of these classes. Ballet is the basis of all forms of dance & all students are encouraged to participate. Strong technique is not only necessary for all disciplines, it will help students develop the strength to avoid injury.


Intermediate Ballet

  • This class is for students with experience in ballet. The focus will be on the introduction of more involved exercises, and more challenging movement. More intricate barre work, center work and grande allegro will be addressed. Preparation and strengthening for pointe work takes place at this level.


Adult Ballet

  • For the serious, experienced student of ballet. Increasingly more difficult & challenging work will be introduced. It is recommended that students of this level take the Pointe class in conjunction with the advanced ballet class.


Pre-Pointe

  • Pre-pointe class will develop the muscles and vocabulary skills need to advance onto pointe.  When students demonstrate the strength and skill needed to progress to the next level, they will be permitted to take the class “en pointe”.


Pointe

  • Participation in the pointe class is at the discretion of the instructor. Only student who are progressing well in the advanced ballet class will be invited to participate.


Lyrical Ballet

  • Ideal for students who want the strength & dynamic of a ballet class but not the sometimes-restrictive technique. The focus of this class will be artistic expression, musical phrasing, & interpretation.


Leaps and Turns

  • This is an advanced jazz class.  Students focus on leap and turn technique.  In addition, strength conditioning is a large part of the class.  Students may be asked to bring their own 2-3 pound weights.  Students must have extensive technique background in order to be placed in this class.


Irish Program

  • Re-popularized by such sensations as Michael Flatley and Riverdance, Irish step is a traditional art form that transcends the generations. Center Stage DCA offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Irish soft-shoe instruction as well as hard-shoe classes for the more advanced Irish step dancer.


Tap

  • Tap dancing is a concentration of footwork and rhythm. Elements of both 'Rhythm' and 'Broadway' styles are taught. Intermediate classes learn basic tap steps, which will improve coordination, rhythm and timing. Students eventually progress into fancy footwork and syncopated tap combination. Experienced classes are offered for advanced dancers.


Jazz/ Hip Hop Program

  • Jazz class consists of three basic sections; a center warm up that focuses on strength, flexibility, cross floor progressions where skills such as turns, kicks & jumps are repeated & finally, a dance combination is taught. Jazz is athletic, full of impact & perhaps one of the most recognizable forms of dance thanks to MTV.


  • Hip Hop is a collective term for arguably the most popular forms of dance today. It’s fun, athletic, intricate & has been popularized by recording artists & performers all over the world. Its evolution is as unlimited as the music that accompanies it.


Intermediate/Advanced Jazz/Hip Hop

  • For the student with some experience in dance. Progressively more challenging technical skills will be introduced, as well as more sophisticated combinations & styles. Experience in ballet is a plus.


The Center Stage Music Program

Individual Vocal Instruction

  • One-on-one lessons are available for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced vocal student. Instruction is appropriate for recreational singers, NYSSMA solo preparation, preparation for performance, and musical theatre/ college audition prep. All lessons allow students to develop the skills and practices necessary for good vocal technique. Components of basic rhythm and tonal musicianship, projection, staging and performance quality weave their way through our vocal program. Instruction will cover a wide range of musical genres and singing styles.


Vocal Workshop I

  • For the beginning recreational musical theatre/ performing arts student, vocal workshop offers small group vocal instruction with an introduction to the broadway and contemporary genres of music. Students will also learn basic theatrical blocking that will accompany their finished pieces.


Vocal Workshop II

  • For the intermediate recreational musical theatre/ performing arts student, vocal workshop offers small group vocal instruction with introduction to the broadway and contemporary genres of music. Students will also learn basic theatrical blocking that will accompany their finished pieces.


Vocal Workshop III

  • For the advanced/ intermediate recreational musical theatre/ performing arts student, vocal workshop offers small group vocal instruction with introduction to the broadway and contemporary genres of music. Students will also learn basic theatrical blocking that will accompany their finished pieces.


Vocal Workshop IV

  • Musical theatre demands that their performers be able to sing and dance.  For the advanced recreational musical theatre/ performing arts student, this class offers small group vocal instruction with an introduction to the broadway and contemporary genres of music. Students will learn how to effectively combine vocal and dance skills into show-stopping, broadway bound numbers!

Individual Piano Instruction

  • One-on-one lessons are available for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced piano student. Students work on musicianship, technique, and practicing skills. Instruction for recreational players, as well as NYSSMA solo preparation and other performance preparation will cover a wide range of music styles.
